proprietary thought leadership content for lead gen
I knew we needed to create some differentiating and value-adding proprietary thought leadership that the team could use as a foundation for lead gen as well as to enhance the website, blogs, content partnerships, demand campaigns, social media, case studies, and other facets of our marketing programs.
I facilitated the working relationship with our data science team and our content team, along with product marketing, brand, sales, customer success, product and other major stakeholders and subject matter experts to produce a trailblazing and proprietary annual report called the Reputation Management Industry Benchmark Report. Under my direction, the team worked with the data science team to extract anonymized customer data, perform deep data analysis and surface trends.
I guided design and development direction working with the design and web teams to create a digital, web-first based report with a dynamic user experience and a forward-thinking look and feel. The design included shareable, branded elements (i.e. branded infographics) that could easily be translated to social, blogs, demand, email and ad campaigns. PDF versions were also created for the user experience as well as demand and email campaigns, and even customer marketing. Through my management, we produced an annual overarching, all industry-encompassing general report called the Reputation Management Industry Benchmark Report. Furthermore, the team took this report and did deep dives into each target industry,I led my team in creating over 13 different industry-specific assets for use in campaigns as well as a statistic repository for internal use by sales, customer success, product and other teams as well as external use in blogs, guides, case studies and other formats. Because of the digital-first nature we also SEO-optimized and shared the report on an evergreen URL for familiarity and refreshed it annually to build brand awareness, backlinks, traffic and other valuable traction for the company.
The report supercharged our lead gen efforts and contributed to building a significant amount of qualified pipeline as well as boosted our online brand visibility. It also cemented our place as an industry leader amongst our competition within the marketplace.
I led the team in a digital web-first strategy – yes we could have created a PDF version first as is typical of many reports however PDFs are not crawled by search engines, which means you are doing a TON of work and it’s not even contributing to your SEO or online visibility. We created a dynamic user interface that was also designed with lead gen in mind (see the table of contents link feature on the left plus the CTA with a secondary option – a method I created to psychologically push people to the secondary based on their likelihood of being at a certain stage of the buying journey/funnel). From this design it was also very easy to create a PDF template for other inbound demand and content needs.
You’ll also notice prominent sharing features in the righthand margin which helped with amplification and engagement.
In addition to the lefthand CTAs being sticky and following a reader down the page, I instructed the team to create/embed branded infographics created from the report data to help encourage sharing and engagement, along with backlink building (often publications would link back to or share our research and statistics).
I made sure the team also surfaced and visualized benchmarks that could be leveraged by the industry as a whole, as mentioned, no one was providing this data in the industry prior. The benchmarks helped us race ahead as thought leaders and authoritative experts in the space, as well as allowed us to educate our customers and leverage the benchmarks as selling points in the sales lifecycle, helping to increase lead and pipeline velocity.
